Girlhood: A Self Portrait of femininity

The transition between girlhood and womanhood for me was ambiguous, dreamlike, and filled with friendship and self discovery. Car rides were energetic and held riveted questions of what is love, what is sex. We dyed our hair, painted our nails, and decorated our rooms, for girlhood felt fleeting and womanhood felt certain.

In that, we were wrong, girlhood did not leave when womanhood arrived and I never stopped loving or being a girl. This project is a self reflection of my female adolescence as much as it is a reflection of myself now.

Resembling the love letters written on my walls, the poem of female youth is best kept short and sweet, this is my love letter, this my self portrait of girlhood.

Girlhood - “the state or time of being a girl”
